BEWARE OF DAVID CHILDS JR., THE PRESIDENT AND OWNER OF CHILDS EXPRESS. HE WILL NOT COMPLETE THE MOVE AFTER BEING PAID. HE WILL DAMAGE YOUR FURNITURE. HE WILL REFUSE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH A CLAIM FORM. HE WILL OVERCHARGE YOU. HE WILL IGNORE ANY ATTEMPT TO CONTACT HIM. USE ANOTHER MANAGER AND CARRIER THAT WILL PROVIDE SERVICE AND NOT CHEAT YOU!
In June, Alex Meyers of Childs Express quoted me a total moving fee of $770, which was also supposed to include any travel time. He charged me an additional $77.50 which is not specified on your invoice. Although I paid the entire fee, I called him the same day to dispute this additional fee. He said it was because your people spent 4 1/2 hours which was a outright lie. Although Alex Meyers told me that the movers would call when they were on route, they did not.
I had to call their offices, and finally got called at 9:10 am. I met them at the storage unit at 9:20, and their work was concluded at 12;23. That was 3 hours and 3 minutes. There should have been no additional charge. They have refused to discuss this issue and to provide a remedy. Their own invoice clearly indicated $770. Their mover dropped and dragged my custom-made bookcase along the cement. He did not offer any apologies. He said he would report it.
Apparently, he did not. Before they left, I asked the older mover if the bed had been reassembled. He said “was it supposed to be?” A few minutes later I went upstairs, only to find that the slats were not assembled. He said the slats were the wrong size, and that they were not needed. They were the original slats. I called Sealy, Simmons, Serta, and over 10 local furniture companies. All said that all queen and king size beds need slates. On June 6, I reported this to Alex Meyers. He told me that if you would have to come out for repairs to both my bed and bookcase, that I would be charged $290 for service, and a 2 hour minimum charge.
On June 8, I reported to Meyers that the entire bed collapsed the first time I sat on it. I now have a bed that I can neither sleep on, or sit. The Bennington Pine bed is now either damaged or destroyed, due to the incompetence, negligence or just plain laziness of Childs Express employees. Alex Meyers refused to inspect or review the damages to my furniture. Instead, he offered me $20 total reimbursement for what could be hundreds or even thousands of dollars in damages. How insulting!
I emailed David Childs with photos of my damages. As expected, he just ignored my requests for resolution. Childs did not complete the move, damaged my furniture and overcharged me. I suggest using a mover who intends to honor the contract, and accept responsibility for the actions described above. Tony Raymond (((REDACTED))) MD (((REDACTED)))
